The 2026 MLS Defender of the Year market is the widest board on the league's awards slate. Polymarket lists 45 defenders, the event has drawn roughly $970K in cumulative volume, and MLS ballots close on November 9, 2026. The live board above ranks the current prices. What it cannot show is how thin most of those prices are, or that several defenders named in MLSsoccer.com's own award previews have no contract on the list at all.
MLS opened voting for its year-end awards on October 21. Three groups vote: members of the media, club technical staff and active MLS players, with each group counting for 33.3% of the total. Club staff and players cannot vote for their own team's players. To be eligible, a defender must have played at least 500 minutes during the 2026 regular season.
The calendar is tight. The regular season ends on Decision Day, Saturday, November 7. Voting closes Monday, November 9 at 8 p.m. ET, and MLS announces finalists for every award on Thursday, November 12. The award honors regular-season play only, so nothing that happens in the MLS Cup Playoffs changes the ballots.
The front of the listed field includes Robert Voloder, Jalen Neal, Matt Miazga, Brendan Hines-Ike, Robin Jansson, Rudy Camacho, Justen Glad and Tristan Blackmon, with Kamal Miller, Walker Zimmerman, Miles Robinson and Aaron Long further down. Henry Kessler is also listed; an MLSsoccer.com awards preview called the Charlotte FC defender an under-the-radar pick.
The previews pointed elsewhere for their favorites. Bradley Wright-Phillips picked Nashville SC's Maxwell Woledzi, writing that his "strength, energy and passing range have anchored the league's best defense," with honorable mentions for Philadelphia Union's Neil Pierre and Chicago Fire FC's Mbekezeli Mbokazi. A separate numbers-driven piece backed Vancouver Whitecaps FC's Tate Johnson, who ranks as the league's top defender by American Soccer Analysis' metric.
None of Woledzi, Johnson, Pierre or Mbokazi has a contract on Polymarket's list as of November 4. The event does carry dozens of unassigned placeholder outcomes, so Polymarket can add names before the award is decided. Until it does, a win by any unlisted defender would send every listed contract to No.
Most contracts on this board have almost no resting liquidity. On November 4, Jalen Neal's contract showed a best bid of 0.5% against a best ask of 82%, and Henry Kessler, Robert Voloder and Matt Miazga each showed gaps of more than 25 points. When the book is that hollow, the displayed price is the last trade, and one small order can reprice a candidate.
The price history shows exactly that. Between October 19 and November 3, daily closes on Neal's contract ranged from 0.3% to 30%, and Henry Kessler's ranged from 0.3% to 29%, on a few hundred dollars of trading each. The headline volume is also concentrated: the contracts on David Brekalo and Jakob Glesnes account for roughly $740K of the event's total, and both now trade in the low single digits. Treat the ranking as a loose signal until the finalists are public.
The market resolves to the player MLS names its 2026 Defender of the Year. Finalists are announced November 12, 2026; MLS has not published the winner announcement date in its voting release. If no winner is declared by December 31, 2026, the market resolves to Other. Full tie and multiple-winner rules are below.
The defenders on this board play for the clubs priced on the MLS Cup 2026 odds board, where Nashville and Vancouver, the clubs behind two of the preview favorites, also carry contracts. The conference boards split that field: compare the MLS Eastern Conference 2026 odds with the MLS Western Conference champion odds. Resolves to the player who wins the 2026 MLS Defender of the Year award, voted on by media, club technical staff and active players (33.3% each) for the 2026 regular season, with a 500-minute eligibility threshold. MLS voting closes November 9, 2026 and finalists are announced November 12, 2026. In a tie the official MLS winner stands; if multiple winners are announced, the contract resolves to the player whose listed last name comes first alphabetically. If the season is cancelled, postponed past December 31, 2026 ET, or no winner is declared by then, the market resolves to Other. The source is official MLS information, with a consensus of credible reporting as a fallback.
